Modeling, Numerics, Differential Equations Group

The Modeling, Numerics, Differential Equations Group formed in April 2001 from the Functional Analysis Group and the Numerical Mathematics Group of the Department of Mathematics at TU Berlin. The years between 2000 and 2004 were characterized by appointments of a variety of new researchers.

To date, the Modeling, Numerics, Differential Equations Group covers in particular the areas of numerical mathematics, non-linear optimization and control, ordinary and partial differential equations, and applied functional and harmonic analysis both in research and teaching. For undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics, members of the group offer a wide variety of courses in the aforementioned research areas and act as advisors for Diplom, State Examination, Bachelor, Master, and Ph.D. theses. Moreover, they are responsible for the majority of math courses for applied programs such as engineering. The Practical Mathematics Project Group (PPM) enables engineering
students to participate in an alternative, project-oriented program
in numerical mathematics.

The university-financed research is increasingly supplemented by research financed by other sources such as the DFG. Because of the large number of such projects granted to members of the Modeling, Numerics, Differential Equations Group, numerous new positions for young researchers are frequently offered by the group. The group is also involved in various projects within the DFG-Research Center Matheon "Mathematics for Key Technologies", and takes an active part in the Berlin Mathematics School (BMS).
