Configuration of Mail Service

Work in progress!

The following settings apply to the mail service of the Institute of Mathematics.

Please contact the (staff) with any problems concerning the mail service

Sending mails - settings for the outgoing SMTP Server

ATTENTION: the configuration described below is only intended for use on the desktop computer of the Institute of Mathematics. If you want to send mails from outside of the mathematics network (e.g. from a notebook from the eduroam WLAN or from home), then it is best to configure the exchange server of the TU Berlin: exchange.tu-berlin.de (Port 587, encryption: STARTTLS, authentication: password and as username: Ihr_tubIT_Kontoname@win.tu-berlin.de).

For mail.math.tu-berlin.de use the following settings in your mail program for sending mails (settings for the outgoing server). You have to configure an encrypted connection with

STARTTLS (not SSL/TLS!)

and

"no authentication".

For connections without SSL, please select the value "None" under "Connection Security" and also set "no authentication".

Both "25" and "587" (for STARTTLS) can be used as port.

Reading mail - IMAP, POP and SSL

At the mail server mail.math.tu-berlin.de the reading of mails via IMAP and POP is for security reasons only allowed via SSL connection. In the following you will find for selected applications a partly illustrated instruction how to enable SSL support. Please accept the security certificate for the mail server after the conversion. If you accept it forever, this is a one-time matter for the validity period of the certificate.

Note: Access via a network file system connection (like NFS) is disabled within our network. Also terminal based programs like mutt or alpine must use IMAP and have to be configured for this.

Mozilla Thunderbird

For Mozilla Thunderbird, please go to the "Account Settings" via the "Edit" menu. Select the "Server Settings" under the account for mail.math.tu-berlin.de on the left. Settings options appear on the right. Select the entry "SSL/TLS" in the pull-down menu under "Security Settings" under the sub-item "Connection security". The "Authentication method" should be set to "Normal password". The port for the SSL connection should automatically be set to 993. Enter a root folder (often also called IMAP prefix path or IMAP server directory) under the "Advanced" menu item. You are free to choose the name of the root folder. Save the settings by pressing the "OK" button in all menus.

Please accept the security certificate of our mail server at your first login.

alpine (former pine)

The command line tool alpine reads its preferences from a file called .pinerc in your home directory. Edit this file. You have to setup a variable called "inbox-path" in this file that is often empty. Search the variable and change it to

inbox-path={mail.math.tu-berlin.de/ssl/user=your_user_name/novalidate-cert}INBOX

Replace "your_user_name" with the login name of your account at Institute of Mathematics. Alpine will ask you for your password at start of program.

mutt

For mutt edit a file called .muttrc in your home directory. You have to configure settings for the two variables "folder" and "spoolfile" . They ensure that you access the mailboxes via IMAP.

set spoolfile="imaps://your_user_name@mail.math.tu-berlin.de/"

set folder="imaps://mail.math.tu-berlin.de/"

Replace "your_user_name" by the login name of your account at Institute of Mathematics. You should also make sure that the correct domain is attached to the mathematics mail addresses. Configure the following line in .muttrc:

set hostname=math.tu-berlin.de

At first start of mutt accept the certificate of the mail server!
