- © Johann Rudolf Huber [Public domain], via Wiki

Today we say: Happy
350^{th} Birthday, **Johann Bernoulli**!

Johann Bernoulli [24] was a Swiss mathematician and medical doctor, younger brother of the mathematician Jakob I. Bernoulli [25] and father of the mathematician Daniel Bernoulli [26]. The Bernoullis were a patrician family of merchants and scholars; Johann is known for his contributions to infinitesimal calculus and L'Hospital's rule as well as making the new branch of mathematics "Analysis" known on the european continent.

On this occasion we put together a small exhibition about Johann and his family. It can be found right next to our entrance until the end of august.

Today is the **150th
death anniversary **of one of the most important
mathematicians: Georg Friedrich Bernhard Riemann [54]. He lived in the
19th century and knew various scientific figures of his time. Despite
his only 39 years he was a pioneer in many fields of analysis,
differential geometry, mathematical physics and analytic number
theory. His work is still of great importance for the sciences.

**Riemann **is known and has named different
mathematical structures: Riemannian geometry, Riemann surface, Riemann
integral and much more.

Books for Riemann geometry can be found at the call number
**53B **and **53C**. Riemann's collected
works are at **01A75/Ri**.

### Congratulations Sir Andrew J. Wiles!

The Abel Prize for 2016 [59]
goes to **Sir Andrew J. Wiles **(62), University of
Oxford, "for his stunning **proofof Fermat’s Last
Theorem **by way of the modularity conjecture for semistable
elliptic curves, opening a new era in number theory.

Andrew J. Wiles [60] is one of very few mathematicians whose proof of a theorem has made international headline news. In 1994 he cracked Fermat’s Last Theorem, after 30 years of interest in it. In 1963, when he was a ten-year old boy growing up in Cambridge, England, Wiles found a copy of a book on Fermat’s Last Theorem in his local library. Wiles recalls that he was intrigued by the problem that he as a young boy could understand, and yet it had remained unsolved for three hundred years. "I knew from that moment that I would never let it go," he said. "I had to solve it."

And solve it he did! Look at the fascinating book "Fermat's
Last Theorem" by Simon Singh which tells the adventurous story of
this mathematical riddle. Find it at your Mathematics Library with the
call number **00A06/Si**.

### How are our books shelfs organized?

Tuesday, 29. May 2018

- [93]
- © MFB (CC-BY-NC 4.0)

It can be very usefull to know the shelving system, if you want to get a good orientation between all the math books in the library: The first level (two digits) of the call number is the subject area (like 51 = geometry), followed by a letter, which represents the subject category withing the area. The third level (two digits again) tells you the very specific topic of the book. If we have more books than one for the same topic, they are arranged in alphabetical order.

Did you know: our system, the **Mathematics Subject
Classification** (MSC), is internationally known by almost
every mathematician. More information here: https://ams.org/msc [94],
or at our service desk.

Exactly 325 years ago, 18th of March 1690, the famous mathematician Christian Goldbach was born. His work is still interesting for many scientists world wide. And the "Goldbach Conjecture" is still an unsolved problem!

For his birthday the math library presents a small exhibition of books and pictures of Christian Goldbach and his mathematical work.

### Indroducing the "reading corner" - our library sofa

To study mathematics can be exhausting. To relax a bit and to browse some newspapers or popular science journals, we have a cosy sofa in the reading room.

You can find journals of the Fraunhofer- and Max-Planck-Society as well as journals of the German Mathematical Society [110], the European Mathematical Society [111] and the American Mathematical Society [112]. For a daily newspaper we offer the taz [113].

Happy Birthday A. L. Cauchy!
