Gallery in the Mathematics Library
Between 1992 and 2010 exhibitions of contemporary artists took place in the rooms of the MFB in regular rotation (four times a year). An overview of all previous exhibitions can be found here.
The Mathematics Library of the Technische Universität is without doubt one of the most beautiful scientific libraries in Berlin. It is not only frequented by users of the Institute of Mathematics, but also by many users from other disciplines. When designing the rooms, the architects tried to continue the tradition of the old scientific libraries. In designing the interiors, they pursued the idea of giving those working in them creative freedom. Taking up this concern, the Institute used its library as a gallery between 1992 and 2010 to make the Technische Universität and the Institute of Mathematics known to the outside world more strongly and with a different and new accentuation.
The initiators and organizers of this gallery project, the librarians Bärbel Erler and Dr. Iris Hahnemann, offered artists from East and West a forum where they could present their pictures and objects to an interested audience, free from any commercialization. In this way they helped to overcome the still prevailing speechlessness between East and West.
The increasing success of the gallery was also reflected in the press. Reports on the exhibitions appeared in the Berliner Zeitung, the Berliner Morgenpost, the Neue Zeit, the Tagesspiegel, the Tip and the Zitty. The TV channel SFB produced a total of three longer articles in its "Journal in 3", which is located in its channel “Klassik Sender”.
The gallery in the Mathematics Library showed four exhibitions per year. Here is a short overview of the chronology of all exhibitions:
