Classification of the Mathematics Library

Our books are clearly arranged by topic according to the MSC - Mathematics Subject Classification, which also describes the content of each book. So every book has a MSC call number (shelfmark) and possibly several other MSC subject codes to describe its content. MSC codes can easily be searched in the Knowledge Portal Primo search box.

Mathematics Subject Classification is also used by the American Mathematical Society and the Zentralblatt Math for indexing books and articles.

Structure of the MSC

The MSC is a hierarchical scheme, with three levels of structure:

1. = Subject area
11 = Number theory
2. = Subject category
11B = Sequences and sets
3. = Topic
11B05 = Density, gaps, topology

General groups and materials have a two level structure and are represented with a hyphen:

1. = Subject area
26 = Real functions
2. = Specific materials
-00 = General reference works (handbooks, dictionaries, bibliographies, etc.)
-01 = Instructional exposition (textbooks, tutorial papers, etc.)
-02 = Research exposition (monographs, survey articles)
-03 = Historical
-04 =Explicit machine computation and programs (not the theory of computation or programming)
-06 = Proceedings, conferences, collections, etc.

Our Call Number (Shelfmark)

Our call number is made up of the MSC subject code and the first two letters of the first author or editor:

Call number
"Lineare Algebra" by Gerd Fischer
"How to write mathematics" by Norman E. Steenrod, Paul R. Halmos, Menahem M. Schiffer and Jean A. Dieudonné
"Finite frames" by Peter G. Casazza and Gitta Kutyniok (Editor)

Our books are sorted first by MSC, then within the subject code alphabetically by author, then ascending editions of the same book and at last sorted by copy count. The call number can be found at the bottom of the spine of every book.
